Robert Brooke was a surveyor and civil engineer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These papers relate to the proposed Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and include an account of lottery tickets sold from 1798-1799; notes from surveys; estimates and contractors' names; measurements; and other information. The papers also include drawings signed by Benjamin H. Latrobe, engineer of the canal, of proposed aqueducts over Elk Creek and Cow Run, as well as field books from surveys of lands belonging to John Gilpin and others, ca. 1805. There are also tabulations showing a number of township and private surveys made by Brooke and others from January through July, 1806, as well as legal forms, conveyances, and other documents.
